Chael Sonnen says he's never backed out of a fight in his life, but he's not sure about upcoming opponent Wanderlei Silva. The two men have wrapped up coaching on TUF Brazil 3 (the episodes are airing on Fight Pass) and they are expected to meet in the main event of a Fight Night card in Brazil on May 31st. In an interview with MMA Fighting though, Sonnen first said that something was up and Silva might claim that an injury will force him off the card:
"It's one of those things where, something stinks here," Sonnen said Tuesday after a sparring session at the Reign MMA gym. "He's talking more than ever. He's saying things like ‘Chael better not get hurt' and ‘Chael better not fall out.' I've never pulled out, ever. If I'm hurt or I'm sick, I just show up. Never do I complain or I pull out. What that's telling me, he's going to claim he's hurt. He's just doing all these things to tip his hand here, and something stinks and I don't know what it is, but something's going on."
Sonnen also claims that Silva never really practiced with his team during the taping of the show, and he found that weird. When he asked how Silva was going to be ready for their fight, Wanderlei said he only needed eight weeks to prepare.
On the other hand though, Sonnen did praise Silva for seemingly never backing down before:
"I don't like him, but I'm not delusional that he's not a tough guy," Sonnen said. "I'm not delusional that for the most part he's been a man of his word. I can't remember a time he pulled out of a fight or said he was going to do something and didn't do it. I can't remember there was ever a time where he did that."
I guess we'll just have to wait and see if the fight actually does happen or not. If it does though, it should be pretty good.
