Matches to Make After UFC 172

UFC 172 was a very fun and action packed event filled with a good amount of finishes and fun fights. In this post I'll match up the entire card against who I believe they should fight next.

Jon Jones: Jones completely outclassed Texeira last night, once again proving he is the best light heavyweight in the world. I think his next fight is an obvious one: Alexander Gustafsson. The first match was Jones' biggest test and hopefully the rematch will be just as good.

Glover Teixeira: Teixeira didn't really have much for the champion but he is still a top 205 pounder and should be given a high-ranked opponent for his next fight. I believe his next fight should be against Rashad Evans when he returns. If not Evans then maybe a fight with fellow 172 loser, Davis would work.

Anthony Johnson: Johnson returned to the UFC with a big win last night over Top-10 ranked Phil Davis. That win most likely propelled him directly into the list of top 205 contenders. For his next fight he should get someone near the top. The winner of Dan Henderson - Daniel Cormier would work or Lil Nog if he ever plans on returning.

Phil Davis: Davis talked big before the fight but wasn't able to back it up. He's now back out the title picture at the moment but a bigger fight would still make sense. The loser of Henderson - Cormier or Teixeira seems like a good option for him.

Luke Rockhold: Rockhold got a good submission win over The Barbarian last night and is now 2-1 in the UFC. I don't think he should get the next title shot but he's close. The problem with that though is that the two most logical match-ups at the moment are two men he already beat: Tim Kennedy and Ronaldo Souza.

Tim Boetsch: I'm not sure if the UFC will keep Boetsch around any more considering he's fallen from grace in his past couple of fights. His only win was against Dolloway which was a loss in many eyes. If he is kept a fight with someone lower down the ladder will be what he gets. Derek Brunson would be a good lower ranked opponent but still be a test for The Barbarian.

Jim Miller; Miller did what everyone expected him to do with his win over Medeiros. I think he may have what it takes to climb back up the lightweight ladder. He called out Nurmagomedov last night but I don't think that's the fight that should happen. Instead, I like the idea of him taking on Donald Cerrone which would likely be a Fight of the Night.

Yancy Medeiros: Though he got a KO win over Edwards, Medeiros is now officially 0-2 in the UFC because of that KO being overturned. Being 0-2 doesn't look good but Yancy has two things going for him: He's still a good prospect and his losses are to two top fighters. His next fight will be someone he should be able to handle easier. Jon Tuck or Tony Martin would be a good fight for him.

Max Holloway: Holloway is primarily known as a striker but got a slick submission win last night over Andre Fili. He's still very young and will improve over the years which makes him someone to watch for. Hatsu Hioki would be a stiff but reasonable test for the young prospect.

Andre Fili: Fili looked alright against the Hawaiin and despite the loss, he is still a legit prospect. Next up for him would be someone like Noad Lahat or the loser of Edimilson Souza - Mark Eddiva.

Joseph Benadivez: Benavidez is in a weird spot. He's clearly one of the best flyweights in the world but he's already lost twice to current champ, Demetrious Johnson. I expect Joe-B Won to continue fighting in non-title bouts for a while and the perfect next match-up for him would be the winner of John Dodson - John Moraga.

Tim Elliott: Elliott looked like a madman taking the fight to Benavidez early and getting some great takedowns on him. While he did look good, he made a mistake and was choked out by the Alpha Male fighter. Darren Uyenoyama or Josh Sampo would be a fun next fight for him.

Takanori Gomi: Gomi put on a fun show last night against Vallie-Flagg but seemed to tire very early. It was still a fun fight, however, and Gomi came out the winner. Apparently he will be fighting on the next Japanese card and I believe that he should fight Mark Bocek there. Ramsay Nijem would also work.

Isaac Vallie-Flagg: IVF has lost two in a row now in the UFC but last night's fight was a fun one. If anything last night, he proved that while he's a middle-level fighter, he can put on an exciting show. Next up for him should be Kazuki Tokodome.

Bethe Correira: The Pitbull got her second UFC win last night over TUF 18 vet Jessamyn Duke. She looked good battering Duke's legs and using her better striking. A fight with Shayna Baszler would be a good scrap.

Jessamyn Duke: I'm not sure if Duke is ready for the UFC currently. She showed off some good takedowns but not much else in last night's fight. Alexandra Albu or fellow TUF 18 competitor, Sarah Moras are fine options for her next fight.

Danny Castillo: Castillo got a devastating and impressive KO over Charlie Brenneman last night. He's showed off improved striking in his last couple of fights and I personally can't wait to see his next fight. That fight should come against the winner of Daron Cruickshank - Erik Koch.

Charlie Brenneman: Brenneman is 0-2 in this UFC run and is likely getting released. If he stick around then he should face off against Fabricio Camoes.

Chris Beal: Beal looked fantastic last night showing off great striking. His flying knee KO couldn't have been any better. Lucas Martins would be a fun striking battle for the TUF 18 fighter.

Patrick Williams: Williams is probably the lowest of the low in the Octagon right now. That's not to take away from Beal though, his KO was still very impressive. I think Williams will get another fight though and that fight should be against another recent loser, Tim Gorman.
