UFC on Fox fight card primer: Travis Browne vs Fabricio Werdum

David Manning-USA TODAY Sports

Bloody Elbow presents a preview of UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne in our fight card primer series. Here we look at the main event: Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne.

In the main event at UFC on Fox 11 Fabricio Werdum (17-5-1 MMA; 5-2 UFC) takes on Travis Browne (16-1-1 MMA; 7-1-1 UFC). This five round Heavyweight headlines the four fight UFC Fox Saturday main card. The UFC Rankings have this as a battle between #2 and #3 in the division, with Werdum at #2 and Browne just below him. UFC on Fox 11: Werdum vs. Browne airs live from Orlando, FL this Saturday, April 19 with a fight time of 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT. The main card airs on Fox, withe prelims starting at 3:30 p.m. ET on Fight Pass, and 5:00 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

Werdum vs. Browne is your classic old guard vs. new match-up, with the veteran Werdum trying to make his last run to the top and the younger Browne looking to use the veteran's status to boost his own career. At the same time, while both men have good all-around skills, it's largely the classic striker vs. grappler battle, with the striking skills of Browne against the superb jiu jitsu of Werdum. Those alone are reason enough to watch, but Dana White added to the intrigue this week when he declared that the winner here is next up for Cain Velasquez. Major stakes should make for a big fight feel here.

How do these two stack up?

Browne: 31 years old | 6'7" | 79" reach
Werdum: 36 years old | 6'4" | 77" reach

What have these two done recently?

Werdum: W - Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Sub) | W - Mike Russow (TKO) | W - Roy Nelson (UD)
Browne: W - Josh Barnett (KO) | W - Alistair Overeem (KO) | W - Gabriel Gonzaga (KO)

How did these two get here?

Fabricio Werdum is one of the best submission fighters to ever compete in MMA, regardless of weight class. His grappling skills are exceptional, and his signature win - a triangle choke of Fedor Emelianenko - is one of the all-time legendary MMA finishes. He's also greatly improved his striking over the years, making one of the sport's true elite. The X Factor with Werdum is always his schedule. He's only taken 4 fights since that win over Fedor (that's less fights that Fedor himself has fought, and he's been retired for 2 years). This one is coming off a near one year layoff, which itself was after a one year layoff. At 36 years old, time is not on Werdum's side. If he wants that UFC gold, it may very well be now or never.

More Bloody Elbow coverage of UFC Fox Saturday

Travis "Hapa" Browne is a Jackson/Winklejohn product who has been steadily climbing the UFC ranks for four years now. After suffering his first pro loss to Bigfoot Silva in 2012, Browne has been on an absolute rampage, KO-ing three straight opponents, all in the first round. And not just any opponents - all former world champions or #1 contenders. Browne has also introduced a new weapon to his arsenal, the deadly elbows he used to KO both Gonzaga and Barnett. Browne has long been touted as a beast and future champion, but it's only recently he has truly looked like it. One other fun stat for Browne - he has won KO or Sub of the night in 5 of his 7 UFC wins, including his past 3 fights. Not bad at all.

Why should you care?

Veteran vs. new guard, a shot at the champ on the line, and a very interesting match-up. Oh, and it's on free TV. This is a definite must-watch fight.
