Alexander Gustafsson says Daniel Cormier needs a tougher fight at 205 before getting a title shot

Alexander Gustafsson feels that his claim to a UFC light heavyweight title shot is much better than Daniel Cormier's.

Alexander Gustafsson has received an odd demotion of sorts, going from a mildly controversial decision loss to Jon Jones on pay-per-view to a bout with talented but deeply unproven Jimi Manuwa on Fight Pass. That said, it's likely that a win against Manuway puts Gustafsson in a title shot with the winner of Jones vs. Glover Teixeira.

That is, if Daniel Cormier hasn't jumped the line. Gustafsson was asked about Cormier and where he fits into the title picture and had this to say:

"I don't know. But I think he has to do at least a fight against a high ranked guy to even think about a title shot. I think I'm the next in line, after Jimi, I'm the next in line for a title shot."

Cormier was a top contender at heavyweight, where his teammate Cain Velasquez held the UFC belt. His resume at heavyweight was solid and he was set for a big fight at 205 against Rashad Evans before Evans withdrew due to injury. That left Cormier to fight Pat Cummins in the most predictable destruction in recent memory. Something Gustafsson and Jones are holding against Cormier in his desire for a title shot.

As for who Gustafsson would prefer to fight for the title? He wants his revenge:

"Jon Jones…I want to beat him. He's pound for pound the best guy in the world, I want what he have."
