Having strung together back-to-back victories since his sole career loss, it seems the UFC has decided it's time for heavyweight Stipe Miocic to face a harder challenge. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the Cleveland native will face off against former champion Junior dos Santos in the co-main event of UFC 173.
Sporting a career record of 11-1, Miocic has competed inside the Octagon six times. His only loss came at the hands of Stefan Struve at UFC on Fuel TV 5. After giving up a second round TKO to Struve, he rebounded with unanimous decision victories over Roy Nelson and Gabriel Gonzaga.
Dos Santos (16-3) took the heavyweight title from Cain Velasquez on the UFC's debut on FOX. He was able to successfully defend his championship once, before Cain returned to reclaim it. He's coming off a second loss to Velasquez at UFC 166 in his most recent bout.
UFC 173 is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. The main event will feature a middleweight title fight between champion Chris Weidman and replacement challenger Lyoto Machida.
