With something like 50 events in 2014, the UFC has to book a whole lot of fights. Sometimes these fights are huge, and sometimes they're undercard bouts featuring names you might know very well. So we're going to start a new weekly (or bi-weekly if needed) series of articles where we take a brief look at each and every bout booked by the promotion in one place. Without further ado, here we go.
My guess is that you've already heard about this one by now, but the UFC 173 main event middleweight title fight between Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida has been moved to UFC 175 in July after Weidman decided to undergo knee surgery. The new UFC 173 headliner is a UFC bantamweight title fight between champion Renan Barao and T.J. Dillashaw.
There were a couple of other additions/changes to UFC 173 as well. Tarec Saffiedine is out of his UFC 172 bout with Jake Ellenberger due to injury, which led to a bout between Ellenberger and Robbie Lawler being added to UFC 173. Also, with Dillashaw being bumped up to the main event, Francisco Rivera has been inserted into a bout with Takeya Mizugaki.
In another 185-pound bout, TUF alum Luke Barnatt (8-0) meets fellow undefeated fighter Sean Strickland (14-0) according to UFC News on twitter. Barnatt is has picked up three wins in three trips to the octagon, while Strickland made a successful debut in the UFC earlier this month with a win over Bubba McDaniel.
A flyweight rematch between top-ranked fighters John Dodson and John Moraga will go down at the event, along with a great lightweight bout between Diego Sanchez and Ross Pearson. In addition to that, UFC News on twitter gave notice of a solid bantamweight bout for the card:
Yaotzin Meza (20-9) is 1-2 in the UFC thus far and is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Chico Camus. 20-year-old Sergio Pettis (10-1) is 1-1 in the UFC overall and was submitted by Alex Caceres in his last trip to the octagon.
Two bouts have been added to the Vancouver card, with the news coming along via Joe Ferraro of Sportsnet:
Yves Jabouin (19-9) is 4-3 overall in the UFC but has lost two of his last three. He was stopped by Eddie Wineland in his last bout. Mike Easton (13-4) is 3-3 in the UFC but is currently on a three-fight losing streak.
Roland Delorme (9-2, 1 NC) is 3-1 with one No Contest in the octagon, and is coming off a close loss to Alex Caceres last September. 23-year-old Michinori Tanaka (9-0), a former PXC bantamweight champion, will be making his UFC debut.
