Diego Sanchez vs. Ross Pearson set for UFC Fight Night Albuquerque

Andrew Richardson-USA TODAY Spor

England's Ross Pearson returns to action against Diego Sanchez in what should be a great lightweight match-up at UFC Fight Night in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Diego Sanchez is keeping an active schedule, as he's just accepted his 3rd fight 8 months. The very first TUF winner, who trains out of Greg Jackson's camp in Albuquerque, will be staying in the area for a showdown with Ross Pearson at UFC Fight Night in June 7th.

Sanchez (24-7) was unable to get past Myles Jury at UFC 171, losing a clear unanimous decision in March. This comes only a few months after his memorable war with Gilbert Melendez at UFC 166 which saw him battered around the cage, only to score a dramatic 3rd round knockdown to get himself a chance to pull off the upset. Melendez survived and won the decision but it was another chapter in a long list of great Diego Sanchez fights. All that said, considering his win over Takanori Gomi occurred at a catchweight, Sanchez's last official lightweight win was against Clay Guida in June 2009.

Pearson (15-6, 1 NC) was scheduled to rematch Melvin Guillard in London earlier this month after their first meeting ended in a no contest. The Englishman hurt his knee and was forced out of the fight, and Michael Johnson stepped in to send Guillard out of the UFC. Pearson returned to lightweight following a brief stint at featherweight, and has scored TKO wins over George Sotiropoulos and Ryan Couture.

This should be a fun match-up on paper, and I expect plenty of "brawling" moments for however long the fight lasts. It isn't really anything to sniff at in terms of how it affects their standing as top 10 caliber lightweights, but it should be great entertainment for the fans in attendance and those watching on TV.

UFC Fight Night in New Mexico, which airs live on Fox Sports 1, features a main event between former lightweight champion Ben Henderson and Rustam Khabilov.
