Dana White confirms Anthony Pettis vs. Gilbert Melendez for final UFC card of 2014

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

The UFC president confirmed a Lightweight title fight between champ Anthony Pettis and former Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez for the final UFC of 2014 in December.

UFC Lightweight champ Anthony Pettis is currently set to make his next title defense against former Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez at the final UFC event of 2014. It's possible the event will be UFC 182 and will likely take place in Las Vegas, Nevada possibly on December 27.

Pettis and Melendez will be coaching the next U.S. season of The Ultimate Fighter which will fun on Fox Sports 1 in the months before the fight.

Pettis has been a bit of a delicate flower in his UFC tenure, pulling out of numerous bouts with a variety of injuries. Most recently he suffered a torn PCL that required surgery to repair. Melendez had difficulty in coming to terms with the UFC for a new contract, but after receiving a generous offer from Bellator, the UFC felt compelled to match the deal and retain his services.

Dana White announced the news yesterday at a press conference in Puerto Rico and touted a potential 2015 Pettis bout there.
