One day after the UFC announced Ben Henderson/Rustam Khabilov as the main event of a June 7th Fight Night in New Mexico, officials have revealed who will be headlining the June 28th UFN in San Antonio, Texas. Fox Sports' Damon Martin has confirmed that featherweights Cub Swanson and Jeremy Stephens are the main attraction at the AT&T Center. It's the first time either man has been in a scheduled five-rounder and the first time Swanson has headlined either a WEC or UFC event.
Swanson (20-5, ranked #4) was pretty much left for dead at 145 after struggling to beat Mackens Sermerzier in the WEC and then losing to Ricardo Lamas in his UFC debut, but he's hit a stride that has put him in prime position for a title shot. Cub has won his last 5 fights, with 4 of them by KO/TKO, including a 3rd round finish of Dennis Siver at UFC 162.
Stephens (23-9, ranked #11) had made the cut to featherweight on the heels of a 3 fight losing streak at lightweight, and so far the move has paid off. "Lil' Heathen" has beaten Estevan Payan, Rony Jason, and most recently Darren Elkins to keep his undefeated record at 145 lbs intact. This is by far the best opponent Stephens has faced in the division, and arguably the 2nd best fighter he's faced to date behind UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis.
As this pertains to the featherweight title picture, unless Jose Aldo is injured and out long-term, this booking seems to imply that a rematch with Chad Mendes is likely to be the champ's next title defense.
