The UFC welterweight champion is apparently going to be on the shelf for a while. Johny Hendricks stated after his title win at UFC 171 over Robbie Lawler that he had an elbow injury, but didn't know the extent of it. Today, he revealed that it was a torn bicep. MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani tweeted about it:
Johny Hendricks was just on KROQ in LA. Torn bicep. Surgery on Monday.— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) March 19, 2014
More on Hendricks. Rehab 4 wks after surgery, 4 wks of rehab (if all goes well) and hopefully start traning again in 2+ months.— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) March 19, 2014
The injury was actually suffered before the fight with Lawler, and made Hendricks briefly consider pulling out. He also sustained a shin injury later in the same bout.
I think we can all put the pieces together to see what this means for the welterweight division - without a clear-cut challenger and with the champ out for a while, expect at least one contender's fight to see who gets a title shot. Maybe even more than one.
