The UFC 171 weigh ins did not go well. Three fighters missed weight. Renee Forte weighted in at 157 lbs for his lightweight fight against Frank Trevino. Forte elected not to try and make weight a second time and forfeited 20% of his purse for the misstep. Kelvin Gastelum had perhaps the most challenging cut, needing three attempts to make the 170 lb limit. Gastelum initially came in at 172.5, then 172, and finally 171 lbs to make his fight official at the welterweight limit.
Of course, the big news of the weigh-ins was Johny Hendricks, who came in 1.5 lbs over for his welterweight title fight with Robbie Lawler. The fight is for the vacated belt, which Hendricks made a failed bid for last November, in what would be Georges St-Pierre's last title defense before retiring from MMA. Fortunately for Hendricks, he was able to make weight on his second attempt. While Lawler would have fought for the title either way, this now means that, no matter who wins on Saturday, March 14th, one of these men will be walking away the new UFC welterweight champion. Check out the video highlight of Hendricks second weigh in attempt above, he steps on the scale at about 1 minute in.
