UFC president Dana White talks TRT, 'banned' Vitor Belfort and the MMA media

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) may have been banned in the state of Nevada, but that doesn't mean the topic isn't going to raise its head ever again.

So, when the topic came up when UFC president Dana White sat down to speak to the media on Thursday during Ultimate Media Day for UFC 171 it was not a surprise.

Early in the scrum White said that he was happy that TRT had been banned, "TRT is the monkey that is off my back now," White said before turning the focus onto the media handling of the topic.

"You guys need something to talk about. TRT was fun wasn't. Oh that was fun," a laughing White said. "You could write six - seven page stories about it, and Vitor (Belfort), and now it's gone. What is next guys?"

A little later during the scrum the topic returned to TRT and the fighter that has become the poster boy for TRT - Vitor Belfort. When one member of the scrum said that White had gone out of his way in the past to defend Belfort, the UFC preseident replied, "I never defended him, I hit you with facts. I stated facts, it's not like I was defending - and then everything was always Vitor, Vitor, Vitor, there's other guys that are on this stuff, not just Vitor."

Things then took a somewhat strange turn when White essentially blamed the mixed martial arts media for getting the fight between UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and Belfort scrapped from the UFC 173 fight card, "At the end of the day the media got what they wanted. The media got what they wanted," said White. "He's banned. He's not fighting Chris Weidman, and the media got what they wanted. They wanted no Chris Weidman fight with Vitor."

Unless White knows something that has not been disclosed, Belfort is not "banned" from fighting. He's banned from using TRT in every location that has outlawed the use of TRT.

Weidman will defend his title against Lyoto Machida at UFC 173. Belfort has announced that he will stop the use of TRT, and that he hopes to fight the winner of the May 24 fight between Weidman and Machida.
