Former welterweight contender Jake Shields squared off against Hector Lombard on the UFC 171 PPV main card. Lombard took off early, clearly beating Shields throughout the first round. Jake was never able to get dominant position on the ground. There was some criticism of Lomard's inactivity on top, but he clearly claimed the unanimous decision.
Lombard came out aggressive with a big hip toss and followed up with hard ground strikes before Shields stood up. Lombard lunged in with a heavy right hand but Shields didn't flinch. They clinched up and Lombard landed hard on the way out opening up a cut on Shields. Jake dove for a takedown and ate another series of punches. He got back up but was sprawled on again in another takedown attempt. Lombard reversed and rode out the rest of the round in guard.
Shields tried to stay on the outside early in the second round, but Lombard was able to close the distance. Hector landed a couple big blows before kicking out shields legs and heading to the ground. Shields regained guard and the action stalled. The ref stood them up with thalf the round remaining. Lombard sprawled on a takedown attempt before letting Shields up. Lombard hit another toss before the round ended.
After about 30 seconds, the action was stopped due to an accidental low blow by Lombard. When they restarted, Shields immediately went for a single-leg takedown, but Lombard easily sprawled out and landed in guard. They were stood up for inaction and Shields immediately shot for another takedown that Hector sprawled on. In the final second Shields was able to catch a guillotine, but the final bell rang as Hector worked to escape.
