Kicking off the FS2 prelims for UFC 171 out of Dallas, TX, welterweight Sean Spencer stepped into the Octagon against Alex Garcia. The bout got off to a slow start as both men tried to find their range. It was Spencer that landed hard first in the second round as he rocked his opponent. Coming back from a near-finish, Garcia hurt Spencer in return. From there, the two battled back and forth through the remainder of the bout with Garcia picking up the split decision win.
Garcia scored first with a few strikes at range before landing a takedown early. Spencer was able to get back upand escape. Spencer struggled throughout the round trying to land from the outside and avoid Garcia's power shots. Garcia got a couple in before landing another takedown, but Spencer got back up quickly once again.
Through the opening minute of the second round, Spencer worked to land quick straight punches and kicks from the outside. He gave up another takedown to Garcia, but got back up. He landed a big right hand coming out and rocked Garcia. He followed up with a kick then looked to flurry for the finish, but ate a powerful hook from Garcia and ended up rocked himself. Garcia threw wild but couldn't get the finish. Another big right hand from Garcia, but he's looking tired as the round enters the final minute and he went for a takedown. Spencer got back up and hurt Garcia again with a pair of right hands before the bell.
Spence came out in the final round trying to pressure his tired opponent. Garcia kept him back swinging powerful hooks, but couldn't find his mark. Spencer landed a jab and followed up with a straight right before Garcia tied him up against the fence en route to a takedown. Not a lot of action from Garcia on top, he mostly just held on as Spencer stood back up. Spencer with a couple right hands that landed followed by a blocked head kick. Another takedown for Garcia led to back control then mount. Spencer scrambled out and landed a big knee on the way out. Neither fighter was able to land much of anything significant through the final seconds of the fight.
