Lawler uses a right butterfly hook to elevate Koscheck - Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Robbie Lawler speaks to the media and talks about his mentality at the start of his UFC career versus how he thinks now. Matt Hughes also showed him the ropes, so to speak.

Robbie Lawler was on hand to answer a few questions in a scrum. He had some interesting things to says about his maturity, mentality and how Matt Hughes helped him.

Mentality: Robbie Lawler in his UFC debut vs. the Robbie Lawler today

My mentality was I'm just going to go in there and beat this guy up. I'm going to go lay in my hotel not say very much and just go in there and fight, beat people up. Now, there's a lot more to it. A lot more media involved, a lot more interviews. There's just a lot more going on in this sport. At that point in time I wasn't ready for the media attention and now I am.

Turning point

I think when I came back to the UFC, I wanted to embrace everything and make sure I enjoyed the experience. Being around Matt Hughes, he showed me what it takes and what's expected of you when you fight in the UFC. So, it made it easier knowing what you need to do and the kind of things that would be asked of you, and it's not bad... How to do the interviews, how [Matt Hughes would] have to wake up early and do interviews and go here and there [on] fight week. And it showed me what a true professional was and I'm just trying to do the same.

Check out the full interview below, before Robbie Lawler challenges for the vacant Welterweight title against Johny Hendricks this Saturday.
