UFC 173: Weidman vs. Machida fight card shaping up

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

A look at the upcoming UFC 173 PPV in Las Vegas, which sees middleweight champion Chris Weidman face off against Lyoto Machida.

Chris Weidman was supposed to fight Vitor Belfort for Weidman's middleweight strap at UFC 173 in Las Vegas on May 24th. Then TRT was banned by Nevada (and the UFC followed suit). Less than 24 hours later, Vitor Belfort was removed from the bout and Lyoto Machida has since replaced him. It's still a great stylistic match-up and a chance for Machida to join the likes of B.J. Penn, Randy Couture, and Brandon Vera's 2006 aspirations on a shortlist of two-division champions. For Weidman, it's his 2nd defense of the belt he took from Anderson Silva, and he's been practically untouchable since making his UFC debut in 2011.

The co-main even pits Junior dos Santos against Stipe Miocic, nearly a full year to the day after JDS' epic head kick KO of Mark Hunt at UFC 160. T.J. Dillashaw battles Takeya Mizugaki in a massive bantamweight bout, while Jamie Varner fights James Krause in a fun lightweight matchup.

We don't have a full fight card filled out, but here's what UFC 173 has so far:

Chris Weidman vs. Lyoto Machida
Junior dos Santos vs. Stipe Miocic
T.J. Dillashaw vs. Takeya Mizugaki
Tony Ferguson vs. Katsunori Kikuno
Jamie Varner vs. James Krause
Michael Chiesa vs. Francisco Trinaldo
Chris Holdsworth vs. Kyung-Ho Kang
Al Iaquinta vs. Mitch Clarke
Yves Edwards vs. Piotr Hallmann
Sam Sicilia vs. Doo Ho Choi
