UFC 173: Lyoto Machida likes his chances against Chris Weidman

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Ex-UFC Light Heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida thinks his striking skills will give him an edge when he challenges Middleweight champ Chris Weidman for the title at UFC 173.

Lyoto Machida got the call up to challenge Chris Weidman for the UFC Middleweight title at UFC 173 when Vitor Belfort had to pull out of the bout. This came as somewhat of a surprise to Machida but he's confident and will be ready in May.

Machida spoke to MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz:

"Ed (Soares) called me and said ‘I think they had a problem with Vitor and you'll have to fight for the title'," he said. "I said sure, that's great.

"I was already slowly returning to training," he continued. "I'm still suspended, but I believe I'll be completely cleared to return to training next week. I'm always active, so it helps my performance.

"I've fought a lot of wrestlers before, and I know Weidman has a good wrestling, but I'm confident on the work I'm developing with my team," he said. "I believe in my striking game against Weidman's wrestling. He's complete in every aspect of the game, but I'm confident in what I do."

Machida moved down to the 185 pound division in October of last year and has reeled off wins over Mark Munoz and Gegard Mousasi.
