Alexander Gustafsson is coming off a big win over Jimi Manuwa that has put him in position for a UFC title rematch with Jon Jones. Gustafsson was Jones' toughest test to date, doing enough to make some fans -- though not the judges -- believe he deserved a decision victory.
Despite his number one ranking and appearing in a UFC main event against the sport's top fighter, Gustafsson is not exactly making his fortune fighting, something he described during an appearance on Swedish radio last October following the title bout loss (translation provided by Bloody Elbow reader Emil Thorenfeldt):
Interviewer: What kind of money is there in the sport? Is there a lot of money in it?
Gustafsson: No, I wouldn't say that.
Interviewer: There isn't?!
Gustafsson: No, I earn enough to get by and so that I can train full time, but that's it. I can't buy a new Porsche.
Interviewer: But if you had beat Jon Jones, how much more would you have earned? Can I ask you that?
Gustafsson: I don't know the answer to that question but it would have been considerably more. Then I could've bought a brand new Porsche.
Interviewer: So then he [Jones] earned a lot of money?
Gustafsson: He probably did. He's probably a multi-millionaire.
Again, it should be noted that this is from last October. But it does provide some insight into where the world's #1 ranked light heavyweight was following an opportunity at the title.
