Top Prospects to Watch this Weekend

Here are some of the better prospects in action this weekend.

Tachi Palace FC - 6 Feb - Lemoore, CA

Jeremiah Labiano (7-1) vs. Joe Soto (12-2)

Age: 27

Height: 5'10

Labiano has a big chance to make a name for himself against former Bellator BW champion Joe Soto. Labiano has won all seven of his victories by stoppage, with the last three coming by way of submission. Soto is in a bit of a weird place as he has pretty much dropped off the radar after losing his Bellator BW title, and then losing a subsequent match to Eddie Yagin that caused Bellator to cut ties with him. Since that rough stretch he has rebounded with three straight submission victories and could be ready to regain his past form. He is only 26 years old... probably never headed back to Bellator, but with a win here, I think he would be a great addition to either WSOF or the UFC rosters.

Labiano vs. Santistevan

Soto vs. Warren Highlights

Soto vs. George

Cain Carrizosa (5-0) vs. John Reedy (10-5)

Age: 27

Height: 6'0

Carrizosa's last fight was a submission victory at Bellator 102 in October. He is a great LW prospect, but I'm unsure if he is locked into a contract with Bellator at this time. Cain trains his Muay Thai with Doug Marshall

Carrizosa vs. Quesada

Hector Sandoval (6-1) vs. Benny Vinson (5-1-1)

Age: 27

Height: 5'5

Team Alpha Male product Sandoval was #6 on the 2012 BE Scouting Report. He did not fight at all in 2012, but scored two victories in 2013, and is probably only one or two fights away from landing a spot alongside many of his teammates in the UFC.

Sandoval vs. Escalante

Nitrix Champion Fight - 8 Feb - Santa Catarina, Brazil

Luis Rafael (24-0) vs. Gabriel Fernandes (2-2)

Age: 21

Height: 5'8

#10 Bantamweight

Rafael is a frequent member of Prospects to watch, as he keeps the busiest schedule in the sport. He has a couple of quality wins, but most of his record has been built against very low level competition. His strong point is his grappling and submissions, and in general he is looking to get the fight to the ground and get a submission. This fight is actually a rematch of a 30 second TKO win for Rafael from last August.

Rafael vs. Dutkevis

C3 Fights - 8 Feb -

130lbs Catchweight

Tyler Shinn (6-1) vs. Jonathan Lopez (4-4)

Age: 27

Height: 5'5

Shinn has competed exclusively at BW so far in his MMA career but recently announced that he is going to drop to FLW. He was a two time National Qualifier while wrestling at Oklahoma St. His only MMA loss came to TUF: 18 winner Chris Holdsworth back at RFA: 4. Tyler is a relentless wrestler in the cage who has good double and single leg takedowns, and then controls position while working for submissions.

Shinn vs. Land - Shinn fight starts at 10:00 minute mark

CFFC - 8 Feb - Atlantic City, NJ

Jonavin Webb (4-0) vs. Whitney Jean Francois (2-3)

Age: 24

Height: 5'10

Webb comes from a wrestling background, but after a short stint wrestling in Junior College at Gloucester County College, he found his way into MMA. He currently spends time training with UFC vet Ricardo Almeida, where he has earned a Brown Belt in BJJ. This is an outstanding team for him to train with in his native New Jersey.

Webb Pro debut

Island Fights - 8 Feb - Pensacola, FL

Dillon Cleckler (3-0) vs. Jonathan Ivey (30-50)

Age: 32

Height: 6'3

Cleckler was a linebacker in college for Southern Miss, who reportedly went 10-0 as an amateur before recently transitioning to the pro MMA side. He has finished all three of his pro opponents in the 1st round.

Cleckler with a big KO

Cage Sport - 8 Feb - Tacoma, WA

Miriam Cordosa (0-0) vs. Katie Howard (0-0)

Age: 27

Height: 5'2

Cordosa is a BJJ Blackbelt and ranked in the IBJJF top 20 females. She has won five world Championships at different belt levels over the years, and will be an interesting prospect to follow as she moves to MMA.

RoadFC - 9 Feb - Seoul, South Korea

Mikihito Yamagami (10-2) vs. Nam Jin Jo (9-6)

Age: 26

Height: 5'8

Yamagami comes from a kickboxing background, and has improved at using his height and length over the last few years. He has spent much of his career at STW, but recently moved up due to the difficulty of the weight cut, and the potential to get a spot in the UFC. Mikihito has spent time stateside training with Dominick Cruz and the guys at Alliance MMA in order to gain familiarization with fighting in a cage, and the unified rules.

Yamagami vs. Ito Highlights

Review from last week:

Legacy FC - 31 Jan - Houston, Texas

Henry Cejudo (6-0) used his elite wrestling to pick up a UD over Elias Garcia (4-1)

Havoc Fighting Championship - 31 Jan - Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

Malcolm Gordon (4-0) ended Mike Davis (11-4) eight fight winning streak by submitting him in the 2nd round. The 23 year old Gordon has now finished all his opponents, and is likely going to be on the UFC's radar very soon.

SteelFist Fight Night - 31 Jan

Jon Neal (5-0) vs. Aaron Sutton (4-4) was scrapped.

Best of the Best - 1 Feb - Harlingen, Texas

Ryan Spann (5-0) picked up a 5 round UD over Randy McCarty (1-2).

I'm not perfect, if I've missed a prospect let me know in the comments section.
