As the fighters stepped on the scales for the UFC Fight Night: Macau weigh-ins, there were two participants who were noticeable absent in Alberto Mina and Zak Cummings. Shortly after the event, Mina faced the press and announced that his bout is off as his opponent never came close to making weight.
Interview: Bellator dispute put UFC's Mina on hold
Undefeated since starting his MMA career 8 years ago, Alberto Mina should've been given a shot at the big leagues a long time ago. It's better late than never though, as the Hong Kong native spoke to Bloody Elbow about his long road to the UFC
According to officials, Cummings was 8 lbs over the welterweight limit prior to the weigh-ins, and doctors had to pull the plug just a few hours before they were set to step on the scale. The Hong Kong-based fighter, who was looking forward to his UFC debut in front of a partisan crowd, expressed his displeasure once he heard the news.
"I had no problems with my weight. I wanted to fight anyone, anywhere, at any weight, but it was a decision of my coach," said a visibly disappointed Mina, "For me it is very frustrating because I am representing Hong Kong, and I have waited for this moment my entire life"
According to Mina, UFC president Dana White called him from the US and stated that he understands his camp's decision, and will still be giving him both his show and win money.
