WSOF Canada Results: Ford KOs Powell, Mocco Falls to Rama

WSOF Canada

World Series of Fighting held a card this weekend (Friday, February 21, 2014) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In the main event Ryan Ford knocked out Joel Powell. Also, Smealinho Rama defeated Steve Mocco by decision.

The first World Series of Fighting (WSOF) Canada card took place on February 21, but due to Olympic coverage, it will not air on NBC Sports until February 28. Bloody Elbow has the results right now (via topmmanews.com).

In the headlining fight, Ryan Ford knocked out Joel Powell by a front kick to the head less than a minute into the fight to become the first WSOF Canadian welterweight champion. Topmmanews.com provides a great animated gif of the knockout.

Also notable, 2008 freestyle wrestling Olympian and two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion Steve Mocco lost by decision to Smealinho Rama. It sounds as if Mocco really won the first two rounds of the fight, gassed in the third and received a bit of raw deal from the judges. This comes as a surprise as Mocco, though not the world's trimmest athlete, always demonstrated excellent endurance throughout his combat sports career. Mocco can certainly right the ship after this defeat, string together some WSOF wins and make it to the UFC, however, bad deicision or not, Friday's loss likely lowers his estimated ceiling in the MMA world. MMA has clearly changed, and while wrestling skills will rank as the most important a fighter can possess for the foreseeable future, the era of ultra-decorated wrestlers entering the sport around the age of 30 and then dominating may now be over, Daniel Cormier notwithstanding.
