There was no mystery as to who won the first two rounds: Maia was able to hit a takedown in the opener and spent most of the frame working guard passes from the top. In sharp contrast, MacDonald easily shucked off Maia's stream of takedown attempts and put a little of everything in his face, including a telephone-pole-like jab and a wide range of kicks from distance along with explosive one-two's in the pocket. Maia offered almost no offense in the second and was wobbled on more than one occasion.
MacDonald stayed on the trigger in the third round, wearing Maia down with a steady torrent of body kicks and frighteningly accurate punches. Maia's takedown attempts became more and more predictable as the fight progressed and MacDonald's striking looked phenomenal.
Rory MacDonald defeats Demain Maia by unanimous decision (29-28 x 3)
