UFC 169 results recap: Jamie Varner vs. Abel Trujillo

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Jamie Varner and Abel Trujillo went to war to open up UFC 169, and the ending will shock you.

The UFC preliminary card disappointed. Action was sparse throughout and the crowd grew restless before the PPV broadcast even started. Lightweights Abel Trujillo and Jamie Varner fixed that problem. It was an absolute war from start to its shocking finish and well deserving of FOTN honors.

Varner's best moment of the 1st round came when he took Trujillo's back and then briefly threatened with a north-south choke on Trujillo, but Trujillo was able to get out of it. Aside from that, bombs were traded and Trujillo was able to connect on the harder punches. Round 2 was an early candidate for best round of 2014. Varner rocked Trujillo with a left hook, and after a big flurry Trujillo dropped to the mat and went into survival mode and survive he did. When he got back to his feet, Varner continued to go for the KO blow, but Trujillo uncorked a right hook from hell that sent Varner sprawling face first onto the canvas and out for the count. A stunning result and turn of events. Abel Trujillo def. Jamie Varner via KO (punch) at 2:32 of round 2.

What was the high point of the fight?

Well what else do you expect me to say? The knockout punch and the exchanges that preceded it!

Where do these two go from here?

Trujillo (12-5, 1 NC) overcame serious adversity in the 2nd round and pulled off one of the most amazing knockouts that I've personally seen and the biggest win of his career. A top 10 opponent might be in his future.

Varner (21-9-1, 2 NCs) has effectively snatched defeat from the jaws of victory for the 2nd time in his last 3 losses (the other being the 3rd round submission against Joe Lauzon). This was his first ever KO loss and drops him to 1-3 in his past 4. He put in a good showing but got hit with a hell of a shot, and now drops to 1-3 since upsetting Edson Barboza in his UFC return.

Watch now, later, or never?

Now. Right now.
