It seems as though Gilbert Melendez & the UFC are having some trouble getting a new contract worked out. Gil's old contract expired a couple months ago, & it caused UFC 170 to lose a planned bout between Gil & Khabib Nurmagomedov. It made sense for Gil to wait for FOX 10 & UFC 169 to go down to see just where he stood in the Lightweight division. He may have thought with Josh losing he would have more leverage to negotiate a better contract, possible with a title shot written in.
Not only does Dana want to give Aldo the next title shot at 155 lbs, but Dana also booked the only 2 guys that make sense to fight Gil (Khabib & Cowboy) for different fights on April 19th. Other top 10 guys are injured like Thomson & Grant, while Diaz is his teammate & they have let be known in the past that they will not fight each other. If I was Gil I would strongly consider going to Bellator. Fights with Eddie and/or Chandler would be amazing, although Eddie may be leaving if he beats Chandler again.
Has anyone heard anything regarding the progress of a new deal? Please let us know.
