Matt Brown apologizes for telling female fighters to go topless

Joe Camporeale-US PRESSWIRE

In the wake of backlash from comments on his podcast, "The Immortal" issues a formal apology for his controversial statement.

UFC welterweight Matt Brown got himself into hot water on Thursday with an insensitive remark regarding his female colleagues. Brown debuted his podcast Legit Man Shit earlier this week. One of the topics he addressed was women fighting in the Octagon.

Identifying his disinterest in WMMA, Brown proposed a solution:

I just think this, if I'm [going] to pay $60 for a Pay-Per-View to watch women fight they should at least be topless.

The comment got him a witty response from future women's bantamweight challenger Sara McMann.

Brown pulled his podcast off the air shortly after the media picked up the story. Fox Sports first reported a statement from UFC PR, then from Brown himself:

"Matt Brown has apologized for the comments made on his podcast, and we have addressed the matter with him. His comments don't reflect the views of the UFC. There'€™s no place for discrimination within our organization at any level. The UFC is built on principles of respect, and any statements to the contrary are not acceptable."

"I have spoken with the UFC about the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy and what is required and expected of me as a professional athlete under the terms of my promotion agreement," Brown said.  "The UFC has a policy of inclusion and respect for all people and I understand the importance of being more aware of my actions and words."

Brown was supposed to fight Carlos Condit at UFC on Fox 9 in December before a back injury forced him from the bout. He has not given a timeline for his return to action yet.
