Ali Abdel-Aziz issues WSOF challenge to Bellator for a 10 fight PPV card

WSOF matchmaker Ali Abdel-Aziz appeared on the MMA hour today and it was with a surprising proposition in mind.

In a page torn straight from the annals of pro-wrestling propaganda, World Series of Fighting matchmaker and promotional director Ali Abdel-Aziz appeared on the MMA Hour on Monday, January 6th and laid down a challenge. The idea, a ten fight PPV card pitting WSOF's best against Bellator's best. The WSOF Twitter account released Abdel-Aziz's proposal for the matchups:

It's a strange idea, for a professional sports organization, a sort of MMA All-Star game for promotional bragging rights. And while it's probably not going to happen, I can't help but feel that it's a bit of inspired decision making on behalf of the WSOF. Whether Bellator ignores it or not, it lays a firm competitive battle line beteween the two promotions and furthers notions that the UFC is going to use the WSOF, not just as a talent pool to dip into, but as a buffer in their proxy-battle with the Viacom owned promotion. Abdel Aziz explained his reasoning for the idea in greater detail (Transcript via Shaun Al-Shatti):

Abdel-Aziz went on to claim that the WSOF is the world's #2 MMA organization, with obvious hopes that a card like this would be the perfect opportunity to show it. The numbers don't exactly bear that out (WSOF ratings have decline in each of their last three shows), but, nevertheless, this is a pretty fun idea. I can't see it actually coming to fruition, but Rebney's response should be pretty entertaining, so be sure to stay tuned as this story evolves over the next few days.
