I never really start posts... But giving it the old college try here. I looked up one of my favorite fighters and was unpleasantly shocked to see how dismal his record is against middling competition. This guy showed up at my BJJ gym in North Carolina with Stann when Stann was dabbling with Team Quest. Can you guess this fighter's name?
Sokodjou. Yup. This guy was on a tear, and was going to fight Llyoto Machida. Stann claimed that Machida sucked and his karate wouldn't work. After witnessing Sokoudjou's athletic prowess, I predicted he would be UFC light heavyweight champion in two years. Easy.
Time has not been kind to Thierry. I loved watching this guy do his judo in the gym and learned some valuable things from him. He's built like a RB and could probably transition easily into that role. But, man... results have been a shadowy, dark cover and what I thought could have been... He just recently got TKO'd and KO'd by some no-names in Russia. Ouch.
I loved the knockouts in Pride, and always figured he would be coming back to do great things with a little more time, effort and training. He flat out sucks. No offense to him as a fighter-- he could certainly whip my ass... But he's not good. I loved the Preadator mask and his whole persona. Super nice guy. Not good at MMA.
On the flip side, I was wrong about Nick Diaz going to be good. I thought the Lawler knockout was a fluke. Boy, was I ever wrong. I love watching Nick Diaz, too.
Since those earlier evaluations in my MMA watching days, I've gotten a lot better at recognizing talent.
How about you guys? Which fighters have you completely miscalculated? No self congratulatory pats on the back about how right you were about Rousey, or those in the minority, Machida! Only miscalculations! Nobody likes those who think they are the smartest guy in the room!
