Mikey Garcia def. Juan Carlos Burgos by unanimous decision (118-110, 118-110, 119-109)
Mikey Garcia had a tremendous 2013, and he's off to a good start in 2014. This was another in an increasingly long line of impressive Garcia performances. As usual, Garcia took a bit of time to get going, but once things picked up, he showed his technical superiority over Burgos. Garcia blocked the offense from Burgos, struck back with his own, and dominated the fight. There were early fireworks, as Burgos badly wobbled Garcia in round 2, only for Garcia to come back and hurt Burgos seriously in round 3. From that point forward, it was all Garcia, though in a performance that was much more technically impressive than it was exciting.
Talk now is of Garcia possibly being up next for the winner of Manny Pacuqiao vs. Timothy Bradley 2 in April, which seems like quite the huge fight for Garcia, but we'll see. Yuriorkis Gamboa was in attendance - a Garcia vs. Gamboa fight seems much more likely.
Bryant Jennings def. Artur Szpilka by KO round 10 2:20
This was a Heavyweight fight, but it sure didn't look like one. Both fighters used a lot of movement and kept the pace up all fight, turning in a much more spirited fight than what you often see at Heavyweight. Add in a hot crowd and you had a very fun fight. Early in the fight, the two men traded rounds, but shortly before the midway point Jennings began to take over. He was the superior technical boxer, and used those skills to outland Szpilka. Jennings dropped him in the 6th with a brutal body shot, then ended it less than one minute before the final bell. Jennings will now enter the talk of "the next great American Heavyweight." It may still be a bit early for that, but this was indeed a great performance.
