This much anticipated fight between two of Canada's best boxers is some time in the making. Originally scheduled for May of last year, the fight has been delayed until now. As a result, both men come into the fight with a fair amount of ring rust. Bute's last big fight was a loss to Carl Froch in May 2012. He earned a rebound win over Denis Grachev a few months later, and was sidelined for all of 2013. Pascal's last high-profile fight was the unfortunate two fight series against Bernard Hopkins that saw Hopkins ultimately dominate Pascal. In the near two years since the loss to B-Hop, Pascal has gone 2-0, though neither win was particularly notable. That said, there's no denying that these are two tremendous fighters - they just have not been able to show those skills outside of Canada much in recent years. Now, they both have the chance to shine in a high profile fight on HBO, and in front of what is sure to be an extremely vocal crowd. The result should be a good one.
The night's other featured fight includes an interesting, albeit dark, storyline. Heavyweight Mike Perez returns to the ring for the first time here since defeating Magomed Abdusalamov in November. That fight was an impressive performance by Perez, but it sent Abdusalamov to the hospital and very nearly cost him his life. It is hard to envision being able to just wipe that incident from your thoughts the next time you step in the ring - we'll see how Perez deals with it tonight when he takes on Carlos Takam.
