CANELO ALVAREZ vs. JOSESITO LOPEZ
September 15, 2012

One of the advantages Canelo will have on his side Saturday night is size. A Light Middleweight, Canelo typically fights at 154 pounds, Floyd at 147 (for this fight, they meet in the middle at 152). As such, it's instructive to take a look at Canelo's 2012 outing against another smaller opponent - Josesito Lopez. Now, right off the bat, two things must be said. First, Mayweather will be smaller, but the size differential won't be as great as in the Lopez fight. Second, Josesito Lopez is a very good fighter, but there is a chasm of talent separating him from Mayweather.

That said, this is still a fight that should be watched to show one of Canelo's potential key weapons against Mayweather: the body shot.

More Mayweather vs. Alvarez Coverage

As has been noted time and time again, the defense of Floyd Mayweather is impeccable. His shoulder roll makes landing a clean shot on the chin nearly impossible. And so, for Canelo to hurt Mayweather, he may want to focus his attack not on that illusive chin, but instead on the slightly more accessible body. This is a particularly good tactic as Canelo has nasty body shots, as he shows off against Lopez. Take particular note of that left hook to the body that he throws almost like an uppercut. That punch drops Lopez more than once. Canelo likes that left hook quite a bit, mixing in hooks to the body with his jump-in lead left hook to the head (another punch on display here). By mixing up his punches, Canelo keeps Lopez guessing. That allows him to dig in the hook to the body at times when Lopez is expecting the shot to the head. Against Mayweather, this may be Canelo's best chance for success - to rip the body with that big left hook and use his size and power to his advantage much as he did here against Lopez. Easier said than done against Mayweather, but this fight with Lopez shows one of the key weapons in the Canelo arsenal, and one he must unleash Saturday night.

Plus, this is just a great, entertaining fight. Check it out now, and be sure to join us Saturday night for Mayweather vs. Alvarez live fight night coverage, right here at Bloody Elbow.
