The latest SB Nation rankings for the welterweight division are out, and there's been some considerable movement in the top 10. Georges St. Pierre is of course still the king of the castle, but positions 4-10 are all different from last month's rankings.
The SB Nation MMA panel consists of two people from Bloody Elbow (Dallas Winston and Tim Burke), MMA Fighting (Ariel Helwani and Dave Doyle), and MMA Mania (Brian Hemminger and Thomas Myers). Here's a colorful chart displaying this month's top welterweights:
(Scoring: Fighters are given 10 points for a first-place vote, nine points for second, etc., down to one point for 10th place. The results are then tallied up and presented here. Official SB Nation rankings policy: Fighters under commission or company suspension are ineligible to be ranked during the duration of their suspension or if they have licensing issues. Presently, this does not affect any fighters at welterweight who are generally considered to be Top-10 caliber).
Rory MacDonald is the biggest jumper, moving from #7 up to #4 with his decision win over Jake Ellenberger. This caused Ellenberger to fall two spots to #6. Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren is the only non-UFC fighter in the top 10, and he climbs up the ladder from #10 to #8.
Two new fighters in the top 10 are Robbie Lawler, who has posted consecutive stoppage wins over Josh Koscheck and Bobby Voelker, and Matt Brown, winner of his last 6 fights, most recently a 1st round blowout over Mike Pyle. Lurking on the outside are WSOF welterweight Josh Burkman, plus UFC veterans Dong Hyun Kim and Jake Shields.
