In the main event of UFC 163, featherweight champion Jose Aldo (23-1, 5-0 UFC) overcame an early foot injury to cruise for three rounds, then take out opponent Chan Sung Jung (13-4, 3-1 UFC) when the Korean Zombie suffered an injury of his own. Aldo broke his foot with the first kick of the fight, which shut down his vaunted kicking game and forced him to grapple more. He was still up 30-27 after three rounds on every card though.
Early in the fourth round, Jung appeared to dislocate or separate his shoulder as he landed a punch. The injury was visible to everyone, and Jung tried to pop his shoulder back in so he could continue. He wasn't able to though, and Aldo attacked it immediately. Jung went down and Aldo scored the TKO victory. The finish came at 2:00 of round four.
What was the high point of the fight?
Clearly the finish. Zombie's injury looked bad, and watching him try to pop his shoulder back in was crazy. Aldo attacking it and finishing the fight was brutal.
Where do they go from here?
It looks like the champ is going to be on the shelf for a while. The foot, the same one he injured in a motorcycle accident last year, might not require surgery but it'll still probably keep him out of the Octagon until early 2014. A lot can change in a division in six months but if they were handling the booking right now, Ricardo Lamas would probably be the front runner for a title shot. Aldo has beaten everyone else in the top five.
It's unclear how long Jung will be out with his own injury, but it's going to be a long road back to a possible second shot at the belt. There are a few options for his next bout, with the most likely being a fight against Dennis Siver.
Watch now, later, or never?
Now. The bout wasn't super exciting, but knowing that Aldo is injured beforehand makes you see the fight in a different light. And the finish is nuts.
