UFC 164 results: Soa Palelei finally stops Nikita Krylov in ugly fight

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

In the third bout on the UFC 164 card, Soa Palelei earned his first UFC win by outlasting Nikita Krylov.

Wow, that was ugly. Soa Palelei and Nikita Krylov just engaged in one of the strangest UFC fights in history, but it was Palelei that finally came out on top. Early on, Palelei was controlling the bout, but he gassed out horribly. And he wasn't the only one - Krylov did as well. Finally Palelei landed a big shot early in the third and Krylov completely wilted. Palelei was barely able to put together enough punches to finish it, but he finally did at the 1:34 mark of the third.

Krylov went for an early kick, but it got caught and Palelei took him down. Krylov looked for a guillotine but there wasn't anything there. He then trapped an arm, but couldn't really do anything with it. Palelei moved to mount against the cage, and Krylov rolled over. Krylov came out the back and got back to the feet, where Krylov started to beat him up a  bit. Palelei looked a bit gassed, but got another takedown. He moved to side and Krylov almost got him in a crucifix.

Palelei was complaining between round about his ribs. Palelei got a takedown right away, and moved to mount quickly. Krylov immediately rolled out though. Krylov got to his feet briefly, but Soa took him down. The ref stood them up and Palelei was very tired. Krylov opened up with punches and knees against the cage. Palelei was mostly just covering up and Krylov landed some shots.

Both men were visibly exhausted at the start of the third, Palelei more so. Palelei rocked him with a big punch and Krylov clinched up. Krylov just cowered and Palelei hammered him. He went to mount and pounded him out. It was ugly, but he was able to get the win.

Palelei explained after the win that he broke a rib last thursday, and Krylov caught him in the spot early in the bout. That's what made him gas out so badly, but he was able to hold on and win. Palelei was fighting in the UFC for the first time in six years. He was defeated by Eddie Sanchez in his only UFC fight before this. Krylov was making his UFC debut.
