Al Iaquinta came into his second official UFC fight needing a win, and he got it. Unfortunately for his opponent Ryan Couture, he was in the same spot and couldn't come up with a way to solve the striking of his opponent. Couture showed off a stellar chin and had his moments, but was mostly battered for 15 minutes by the powerful former TUF finalist. Iaquinta teed off on him with right hooks aplenty and could have maybe finished the fight late, but Couture held on. Iaquinta won a unanimous decision with three 30-27 cards.
The fighters traded strikes over the first two minutes, with Iaquinta landing the best shots, particularly to the body. He connected with a right hook that was hard enough to get Couture to try and clinch up. After the separated, Couture was on his bike a bit. Couture landed a hard leg kick that was caught by Iaquinta and they exchanged in the pocket. Couture scored with a flying knee to the chin. Iaquinta fired back with a right hook to the body and another to the head. Iaquinta got a late takedown.
Iaquinta chopped Couture down with a leg kick, but Couture came up with a leg and they clinched up. Iaquinta went back to the big right hooks and was connecting. Iaquinta was handling the striking from distance, but Couture landed some sneaky knees when they were in close and was connecting with some leg kicks. Couture couldn't get a takedown though. Iaquinta got another late takedown.
Couture came out more aggressive in the third with some kicks and went for a takedown. Iaquinta fought it off though, and they went back to striking. Another flying knee from Couture stunned Iaquinta a bit. Once again, Iaquinta came back with the right hook right to the chin. Iaquinta got a front headlock and unloaded with uppercuts, then cornered Couture and unloaded on him. A standing elbow hurt Couture and made him bleed some more. Iaquinta just battered him down the stretch, but Couture made it to the final horn.
