If you haven’t being paying attention, let me catch you up on the short-term career goals of one Chael P. Sonnnen. Sonnen, coming off a recent first round submission win over former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, wants very badly to fight at the UFC’s 20th anniversary show.
Sonnen has a hankering to fill the co-main event spot.
The self-proclaimed "gangster" had requested a fight with Wanderlei Silva after defeating Rua, but that fight is not going to happen with Silva sitting on the injured list until at least January 2014.
UFC president Dana White recently floated the idea that Sonnen, the No. 9 ranked light heavyweight could meet No. 4 Phil Davis in November. For his part, Sonnen asked, what about No. 5 ranked Rashad Evans?
Sonnen and Evans often work together on Fox Sports during UFC events, but the two don’t feel that their on air relationship and the friendship that has come along with that working relationship will get in the way of them stepping into the Octagon.
Evans, speaking to MMAJunkie.com said, "I think it's something that definitely could happen. I think it's the fight that makes sense for both of us. Even though we are friends and we have a great relationship, we have the same goal, and we're in the same weight class."
Sonnen, not wasting an opportunity to insult Wanderlei Silva told MMAJunkie.com, "I got bored waiting for a chump, and I needed a challenge. And Rashad is a challenge with a capital 'C.'"
Either fight would seem to make sense for the UFC to present as the co-main event of the November 16 fight card. Two top ten light heavyweights that have the ability to promote a fight, what’s not to like about that?
