UFC Fight Night 27 Injury Rewind

Mark Kolbe

Almost every UFC event has it's share of fighters returning from injury. Here is a review of some of those fighters for the upcoming UFC Fight Night 27 card.

This edition of the Injury Rewind highlights five fighters on the UFC Fight Night 27 card who are either returning to the Octagon after injury layoffs, or have a notable or interesting injury history.

Martin Kampmann

The Hitman's last fight was a November 2012 loss to Johny Hendricks at UFC 154. He took time off apparently to heal some nagging injuries. Kampmann has suffered through a severe knee injury that kept him away from fighting from March of 2007 through June of 2008. He tore his ACL and LCL, tore muscle tissue and also had a meniscus tear. Kampmann has said that even when he returned to fight 13 months later, the knee was not 100% recovered.

Donald Cerrone

The Cowboy's last fight was a win over KJ Noons in May at UFC 160. He sustained a nasty gash on his elbow, and he immediately posted a celebratory picture of the injury on Twitter.

Erik Perez

When "El Goyito" steps into the Octagon to battle Takeya Mizugaki, it will be his first fight since UFC 155 in December of 2012. Perez suffered from a particularly severe MRSA infection in his knee in April, leading to a hospital stay. Luckily he managed to avoid surgery.

Robert "Bubba" McDaniel

Thanks to Uriah Hall's big right hand, Bubba suffered three broken bones in his face during their 9 second fight on season 17 of TUF. (That was back when Hall was actually winning fights. Remember?) Who can forget Bubba lying prone on the mat, mumbling "What's wrong? What's wrong?", and telling his team that there's something wrong with his eye "from the inside." Here's the video.

Brandon Thatch

In early 2009, Thatch suffered a neck injury and underwent surgery to repair the damage. He did not fight for nearly 20 months, and in a March 2013 interview he describes the time after the neck surgery as "one of the darker periods" of his life. Since the surgery, he has had 7 MMA fights. UFC Fight Night 27 marks his UFC debut.
