The 31 year old Jhonny Gonzalez is a solid fighter - a 14 year pro with over 60 fights on his resume. He's a former two division champion who has been in the ring with some excellent names. He's also the clear B side of this fight.
That's because his opponent Abner Mares is something special. A decorated amateur and former Olympian, Mares made the move to the pro ranks in 2005 and didn't miss a step. He's undefeated in his pro career, with 26 wins and a single draw against Yonnhy Perez in 2010 as the only near-blemish. He was clearly one of the top 2-3 in the world at 122 pounds, and earlier this year moved up to the ultra-tough 126 pound division. In his debut fight at 126, he dismantled the very dangerous Daniel Ponce de Leon, stopping him in 9 rounds on the undercard of the Mayweather vs. Guerrero PPV. That fight was an eye-opener. People knew Mares was good, but the Ponce de Leon outing showed just how good he had become as Mares was able to show his skill in all aspects of boxing over the course of 9 rounds. On the heels of that performance, Mares moved into the #5 spot on Ring Magazine's pound for pound list, ahead of such major names as Sergio Martinez and Manny Pacquiao.
Tonight's fight against Gonzalez is not one where a win will necessarily move Mares further up that list. He can, and should win with relative ease. But it's another fight to establish him in the new division, and to cement his hold on that pound for pound ranking. There's a bright future ahead for Abner Mares - we've seen the start of his journey, and tonight, we get to see him take another step.
On the undercard, Leo Santa Cruz takes on Victor Terrazas in a fantastic, close fight at 122 pounds. These are two good fighters who match up nicely. Santa Cruz has the hype behind him - his insanely high volume punching style has earned him plenty of fans and plenty of buzz. But he's facing a definite step up in competition here, and while Terrazas may not be at his peak anymore, he's been around the block, and should still provide a tough test for the younger Santa Cruz.
