For years MMA fighters, and news have been able to sneak by under the mainstream radar. This was especially true for fighters who were not in the UFC. I don't remember Forrest Griffin, and Miguel Torres stupid rape tweets even getting the time of day from the main stream sports media... but that is changing.
As the UFC and Bellator rivalry juices up, we can bet that missteps by UFC fighters will get a spot on Viacom owned sports outlets, and when I opened up FOXSports.com this morning, there was a whole run down of the War Machine situation from the last few days. The article missed the "Real men Rape" tweet which was the worst of the whole incident, It also is sure to point out that Bellator did not punish War Machine in any way shape or form. Using a NFL comparision, it mentioned that Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receiver Riley Cooper recently received a fine for using a racial slur at a concert.
Nothing War Machine says deserves to be on the front page of a major sports web-site. This guy hasn't been relevant as a serious contender ever in his career, and he has only fought once since 2011. This is about UFC using its relationship with FOXsports to get this promoted to the front page, and making sure that anyone thinking about sponsoring Bellator in the near future knows they are getting in bed with an organization that lets these comments fly by. Of course this could backfire, as UFC has done such a good job of branding itself as MMA over the years, that some casual observers will certainly confuse Bellator for UFC.
