ONE Fighting Championship will have their 11th show back in their home base of Singapore on October 19, and a title fight is already set for the card. ONE FC officials have told the NYPost that a bantamweight title unification has been booked with the current champion Soo Chul Kim making his return against interim champ, Bibiano Fernandes.
Kim is a 21-year-old Korean prospect who claimed the promotion's inaugural bantamweight belt against the highly regarded BJJ champ in Leandro Issa. He has been recovering from a shoulder injury for quite sometime now, and this has prompted ONE FC to set up an interim title, a belt which the former two-division DREAM champion in Fernandes won last May.
When Kim returns to the cage, he will be facing yet another decorated BJJ black belt but it will be more than a year since he last competed. Only one champion will leave with the belt on that night though, so he will have to quickly shake off that ring rust as he will be facing one of the highest ranked fighters outside of the UFC.
The Korean will naturally be a heavy underdog for this fight, but he's no stranger to defying the odds. Experts pegged Kim to lose against both Kevin Belingon and Leandro Issa, but the young fighter showed rapid development and proved everyone wrong by dominating both men. Bibiano is a completely different monster though, so will Kim still be able to pull another rabbit out of his hat? Tough to say, but I guess we'll find out for sure this October.
ONE FC's next event happens this September, in Jakarta, Indonesia.
