Jon Jones is now the new #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world according to the official UFC rankings. His only loss was a DQ vs. Matt Hamill in a fight he was otherwise going to win if he had thrown legal elbows for the remainder of round 1. He's defended the light heavyweight belt five times in two years and now he's actually fighting 205ers again! Alexander Gustafsson was supposed to fight Gegard Mousasi in Sweden, but a facial cut forced him out of the fight at the last minute, and he was just given a title shot instead. Logically, if this happens again then I guess we can see how Jon Jones handles Ilir Latifi.
Toronto is once again holding a PPV event featuring two title fights. In addition to Jones/Gustafsson, Renan Barao fights Eddie Wineland for Barao's interim bantamweight belt. There are a few more slots yet to be filled, but I'm sure if for some reason this card falls apart then we can all be treated to a UFC show starring Nandor Guelmino.
Here's what UFC 165, scheduled for September 31st at the Air Canada Centre, looks like so far:
Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson
Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland
Myles Jury vs. Mike Ricci
Mark Bocek vs. Michel Prazeres
Nandor Guelmino vs. Daniel Omielanczuk
Chris Clements vs. Stephen Thompson
Ivan Menjivar vs. Kid Yamamoto
