UFC 168 keeps Ronda Rousey vs. Meisha Tate, Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva II to be determined

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-US PRESSWIRE

Despite earlier reports that UFC 168 would be getting a bigger and better main event, Dana White now says the Women's Bantamweight championship will remain at the top of the card.

Saturday night, Chris Weidman shocked MMA fans with an incredible second round TKO of former Middleweight king Anderson Silva at UFC 162. The incredible finish capped off an odd bout that saw Silva openly mocking Weidman much like he did to Demian Maia at UFC 112. Undaunted by the champ's antics, Weidman landed a left hook as Silva attempted to bob and weave. The punch landed right on the proverbial button and put Anderson down for the first time since he signed with the UFC in 2006.

Prior to the bout, UFC president Dana White promised that if Silva lost, he'd be granted an immediate rematch. As we reported Monday afternoon, White was so excited about the prospective match that he wanted to schedule it for this December at UFC 168. However, it looks like the rematch will have to wait as the LA Times reports:

Later Monday afternoon, White said he would keep Rousey-Tate on Dec. 28 and that Weidman-Silva II will take place at a date to be determined.

While the UFC's typically big Super Bowl weekend card would seem a likely place for the fight, White says he doesn't want the "biggest fight in UFC history" to have to compete with the big game. So, we'll have to wait and see when Weidman will get his chance to solidify himself as the new 185 lb. king.

Instead, another new UFC champ will get the chance to pick up her first title defense. Rousey first clinched the Women's Bantamweight title at UFC 157 with a first round armbar over Liz Carmouche. At UFC 168, she'll take on her rival Miesha Tate. Rousey took the Strikeforce title from Tate in March 2012 and will look to defeat her again after coaching opposite her in season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter. The fight will take place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV on December 28.
