Frankie Edgar needed to erase a three-fight losing streak, and many thought that Charles Oliveira was put in there with him for the express purpose of getting Frankie a win. He did indeed get that win, but Oliveira put in a good performance. Edgar got the better of the striking though and almost finished the fight late, which propelled him to a unanimous decision victory. The scores were 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28.
Edgar stunned Oliveira quickly with a shot, and then ended up on top. Oliveira got up quickly though. Oliveira landed a kick and looked to jump on Edgar, but Frankie just slammed him to the mat. Oliveira scrambled for a leg lock and they went back to the feet, where Edgar landed with his hands and Oliveira scored with a knee. Both men were fighting at a ridiculously high pace. Edgar started to connect a bit more with his hands. The two men traded uppercuts. The round ended with Oliveira on his back and Frankie's nose bleeding.
The pace stayed very high into the second. Oliveira landed some nice leg kicks while Frankie was boxing him up. Oliveira landed a nice knee but they went back to the ground. This time Edgar kept him there for a while and busted him up with punches and elbows. Oliveira got up with two minutes to go. Edgar caought a kick and sent Oliveira stumbling across the octagon. Oliveira was finding some success standing, but Edgar was connecting more.Oliveira slapped on a guillotine late, but the horn ended his hopes for that.
Edgar connected with a big short early in the third and pressed forward. Oliveira recovered well and landed a nice standing elbow. Oliveira came on with a good combination and knee. Edgar landed a right that hurt Oliveira, and another. And a third. Oliveira vainly went for a takedown but ended up on the bottom, eating punches. Oliveira locked him down to try and recover. Edgar opened up with some more GnP, and the fight ended there.
