In an important featherweight fight that opened UFC 162, Cub Swanson picked up his fifth win in a row by stopping Dennis Siver halfway through the third round. He was very wild in the fight, trying some crazy stuff, but it was his hands that closed it out. He clipped Siver with a bunch of shots that sent him to the mat and closed it out with some ground and pound. The end came at 2:24 of the final stanza.
After the fighters exchanged a few kicks to open, Swanson tried to land a spinning kick. He missed though, and Siver deposited him on the mat. Silver passed out to side control and looked to tie Cub up in a crucifix. Cub fought it off and Siver settled for some elbows to the body. Siver almost moved to mount but Swanson shimmied back to half. A Swanson guillotine attempt allowed him to get up, where they exchanged some kicks before the horn.
Siver used his patented kicking game to get a bit of an advantage early in the second. Swanson was faster, but wasn't putting together combinations. Swanson missed with a cartwheel kick. Swanson landed a couple over winging rights. Swanson scored with a big uppercut, then threw Siver down beautifully and moved straight to mount. Swanson rolled around and briefly secured an omoplata, but got reversed at the bell.
The third was more kickboxing. Swanson scored with some punches and a kick, while Siver responded in kind. Swanson landed a big left, then right, and a barrage of punches that sent Siver to the mat. Cub poured it on while Siver desperately looked for a leg lock. He took too many punches though, and Herb Dean was forced to stop the fight.
