Now I will admit that Anderson Silva
is no doubt one of the best fighters of all time but has his title reign really been that great. Anderson has ten title defenses. That is very impressive but the fighters he has beaten aren't that great.
His first title defense was against Nate Marquardt
. At the time Marquardt was coming off a six fight win streak. The notable wins of that win streak are Dean Lister and Kazuo Misaki
.Marquardt had a solid record of 25-6-2 but had spent most of his career in Japan in the weird Pancrase. Marquardt had four Ufc victories against the great Joe Doerksen
, the guy who inivated the Slavvery position who had a final Ufc record of 3-4, The very memorable Crafton Wallace, and ADCC Champion Dean Lister. When Anderson fought Nate he kicked his ass. Outclassed him and used a old wrestling move called the switch which Nate gave Anderson with that weak outside single. Was Nate Marquardt a legit middleweight at the time kinda. He beat what the Ufc put in front of him so he earned the shot at the belt. Nate Marquardt currently is coming off two loses one by knockout and one he was dominated with leg kicks. So what I get from Nate Marquardt is that he will most likely lose to a top ten guy but can beat most mid tier fighters.
Anderson's second title defense was a rematch with Rich Franklin
.Rich was one of andersons most solid oppnents that he defended the belt against. At the time Rich was no doubt the NO.2 middleweight in the Ufc and his only loss in the promotion was too Anderson. Anderson smashed Rich again this time even using his trade mark matrix like way of avoiding strikes. One thing we learn form this fight is that Rich Franklin doesn't know how to block knees to the body or head. Not really we learned that Anderson is no doubt NO.1 Middleweight
in the world.
Anderson's third title defense was against the Pride Weleterweight Champion Dan Henderson
. This was the best possible fight for Anderson to take. Dan make have come off a loss to Rampage Jackson but he still was a Top ranked guy in the middleweight divison. Dan Henderson was a Pride FC veteran going 13-5 in the promotion and held both the Middleweight and Welterweight
titles. Dan was 3-2 in his last five fights. Those losses were to the Ufc Light heavyweight Champion Rampage Jackson and one of the best Japanese fighter Kazuo Misaki. Those losses are vey respectable. The wins Dan had were against Kazuo Misaki, Vitor Belfort
, and Wanderlei Silva. All of those are greats wins and would look great on any ones record. This fight was Anderson's toughest fight in the Ufc at the time.Dan took Anderson down and controlled him to win the first round. That was the first time since Travis Lutter had a mount for a few seconds against Anderson that Ufc fans saw Anderson deal with Adversity. In the second round exactly the opposite happened. Anderson caught Dan with big strikes that hurt until he got the back of Henderson and secured a rear naked choke.
