In the main event of UFC on Fox 8, Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his flyweight title for the second time with a late finish of challenger John Moraga. The champ had dominated the first four rounds and really went for it in the final stanza, latching on an armbar and getting the tap at the 3:43 mark. It joined a short list of UFC fights that have been ended in the fifth round, and is actually the latest stoppage in UFC history.
Johnson (18-2-1) is now on a four-fight win streak, while the loss ended Moraga's (13-2) seven-fight win streak.
What was the high point of the fight?
The finish. Johnson doggedly worked for the armbar and was finally able to get it. His post-fight celebration included some pretty sweet flying kicks too.
Where do they go from here?
Johnson will take on any flyweight that tries to step up and take his belt. Who that person will be isn't quite clear at the moment. The people at the front of the line appear to be either the winner of the Joseph Benavidez vs. Jussier Formiga fight, or John Lineker if he wins his next bout. But in such a shallow division, things could change quickly and a new challenger could suddenly enter the picture.
Moraga was thoroughly dominated by the champ and it's going to be very hard for him to earn another title shot down the road. His next fight will be a very important one, and could come against a variety of opponents. Personally, I'd like to see him rematch John Dodson, who is coming off a title shot loss to DJ himself. Dodson beat Moraga by decision in 2010.
Watch now, later, or never?
Later. While the bout had it's share of excitement and the finish was great, it was pretty one-sided and you're not going to be missing much in the grand scheme of things if you give it a pass for now.
