UFC on Fox 8 results: Fights to make for main card fighters

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Spor

UFC on Fox 8 offered up a few relevant fights, but where do the fighters go next? Tim B takes a look at the future for the main card fighters.

UFC on Fox 8 offered up a few interesting tidbits - the latest finish in the promotion's history, a pretty nice head kick knockout, and so on. It didn't really set the world on fire when it comes to speculation for the future though. The flyweight champ successfully defended his title, and who he faces next isn't clear. A top welterweight justified his ranking in boring fashion, but he won't fight the champ anyway. Nonetheless, my job is to speculate on where the fighters go from here, so let's get to it.

Demetrious Johnson - Who is next for the flyweight champion? Who knows. Unless I missed something last night from DJ or Dana White, there isn't a clear contender lined up for the champ. Joseph Benavidez is the most qualified, but he's already fought Mighty Mouse and lost. John Lineker is fighting on the main card of UFC 163 and if he wins, it might be him that gets the next shot. No one else is really in the running other than maybe Louis Gaudinot (if he beats Tim Elliott at UFC 164). Of those three, I think Linkeker is the most likely.

John Moraga - He was thoroughly dominated by the champ and got finished late, which isn't good. Other than one hard punch landed in the fourth round and some good defense, he didn't do much of anything. In my eyes, there are two suitable opponents for him. One is John Dodson, since they're both in the same spot right now (coming off title shot losses). The other is Ian McCall if he wins at UFC 163. They tried to book that fight before but it didn't work out, and they might go back to it.

Rory MacDonald - It might not have set the world on fire, but it was effective. Rory has now justified his spot as a top-five welterweight, but he's not really in the title hunt with his teammate in the top spot right now. It seems pretty clear that he wants Carlos Condit next, and the fight was actually booked earlier this year before injury issues stopped that. Condit has his hands full with Martin Kampmann in another rematch next month, but if he wins you can probably assume he faces Rory next. If he loses though, it might be Kampmann that meets MacDonald instead.

Jake Ellenberger -The loss was a huge setback for Jake's title hopes, and he's going to have to take another path to the top now. A rematch with Condit might make some sense if Kampmann beats him, but it's more likely that he's matched up with someone a little lower on the rankings list. Nick Diaz would make some sense if he wants to fight. Josh Koscheck would too now that he's out of the Maia fight.

Robbie Lawler - Two UFC fights since his return, two UFC knockouts since his return. Sure, Bobby Voelker isn't highly ranked, but he's tough as nails and that was a beautiful finish. I'd still like to see him fight Siyar Bahadurzada, but I have a feeling they're going to go back to the originally-booked Strikeforce fight versus Tarec Saffiedine next.

Liz Carmouche - She's not going right back to a title shot like she wants. There are a few ladies in line in front of her now, most notably Miesha Tate and Cat Zingano. She is a force to be reckoned with in the division though, and could give any of the top contenders a run for their money. A bout with Alexis Davis probably makes the most sense, but I wouldn't be surprised if she got the winner of Sarah Kaufman vs. Sara McMann either.
