UFC on Fox 8 fight card primer: Robbie Lawler vs. Bobby Voelker

Bloody Elbow presents their UFC on Fox 8: Johnson vs. Moraga fight card primer, previewing all the action at this weekend's UFC card live on Fox. Here, we look at Robbie Lawler vs. Bobby Voelker.

In a Welterweight fight at UFC on Fox 8, Robbie Lawler (20-9(1) MMA; 5-3 UFC) takes on Bobby Voelker (24-9 MMA; 0-1 UFC). This is the second of four main card fights on Fox. The official UFC rankings currently have Lawler as the #9 contender at Welterweight, while Voelker is unranked. UFC on Fox 8 airs live from Seattle this Saturday, July 27, on Fox with the main card starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.

UFC on Fox 8 is a card that's been hit by the injury bug, and this fight is a pretty big indicator of those injuries. Originally set as Lawler vs. Tarec Saffiedine, the fight was switched to Lawler vs. Siyar Bahadurzada after a Saffiedine injury. Another injury forced Siyar out and Voelker got the call up. This is not a bad fight, but it's hard not to think about both the previously scheduled fights and be a little let down by the final result, though I am still looking forward to seeing Ruthless back in the Octagon.

How do these two stack up?

Lawler: 31 years old | 5'11"
Voelker: 34 years old | 6'0" | 74" reach

What have these two done recently?

Lawler: W - Josh Koscheck (TKO) | L - Lorenz Larkin (UD) | W - Adlan Amagov (TKO
Voelker: L - Patrick Cote (UD) | W - Roger Bowling (TKO) | W - Roger Bowling (TKO)

How did these two get here?

"Ruthless" Robbie Lawler is an old-school Pat Miletich fighter who earlier this year made his return to the UFC after a 9 year absence. During his time away, he put together an impressive resume in Strikeforce and EliteXC among others. But the veteran seemed to be winding down and was on a 1-3 run before his Octagon return. That return, a 1 round KO of Josh Koscheck, quickly quieted any feelings that Lawler was done. It's hard to say how long he can keep this new momentum going, but I look forward to finding out.

Bobby Voelker is a fellow Strikeforce alum, going 4-1 with the company. He ended his Strikeforce runs with consecutive TKO wins over Roger Bowling, but was unsuccessful in his UFC debut, losing to veteran Patrick Cote. That loss came after a two year break in fighting, largely due to the issues plaguing Strikeforce at the time. A busy and active fighter, Voelker has put together nearly 25 fights since making his debut in 2006. He has a huge opportunity to immediately make a name for himself here.

Why should you care?

The old school fan in me loves watching guys like Lawler still going and still winning. I'm excited to see if he can unleash more violence tonight.
