Spike TV's Fight Master series has turned out to be a diamond in the rough. I'll admit, I was among the contingency of folks that thought it was going to be a carbon copy rip of The Ultimate Fighter, but it has proven itself to be it's own entity, and an entertaining one at that.
One of the things that makes the show shine are it's characters. I use the term 'character' loosely, as this is reality TV. I just don't know how to describe it any better than that. These guys are characters in every sense of the word, and have managed to hook the attention of hundreds of thousands of viewers each week.
One of the athletes that has me emotionally invested in the show is Joe Riggs. With Joe you get a guy who's been around the sport for ages, has gone through some extremely difficult times, both physically and emotionally, and has made a dramatic career turnaround. He's the guy I'm rooting for, and I'm probably not alone in that sentiment.
Recently, Joe did a very candid interview with BJ Penn's website radio show that might contain some of the most interesting, yet disgusting stories I've ever heard. It shouldn't surprise anyone, though. Riggs has never been one to hold back out of deference to anyone's delicate sensibilities. Here are a few snippets from an interview that has been keeping the ears of the MMA world burning:
There was one time when a camera crew was getting on my nerves. It was probably the fourth or fifth week, and they brought a camera in my room; and I knew the producers were watching downstairs, and they were going to put this on TV. So I go and pull my pants down and start slapping my balls against the camera so they could see it. That's just me like a monkey just trying to relieve some tension by rubbing my balls. They all come up, ‘Goddamnit, knock it off!' I was just trying to have a little fun, because there's really not shit to do.
There was a funny time where I had come from cutting weight. I talked to one of the producers, I'll tell you guys because they don't show this on TV. I'd come from cutting weight, and I take my shorts off, my underwear off, and they're all stained with shit, probably, and whatever, and I threw them in Tim Walsh's face. It was a perfect shot to the lips. And he peels them off his face, and he wheels them at me, and it hits the camera guy right in the lips. And he went down, talking about throwing up, because they were like saturated with sweat, piss and shit. I was cutting weight, so I was sitting there like pissing myself. It was bad. There were some crazy times, but they didn't really concentrate on that.
It's definitely interesting to find out what goes on during filming of a show like this. Props to Diesel for giving us a glimpse, no matter how gross it might be.
