Demetrious Johnson becomes a father one week from fight night

Only one week away from defending his title against John Moraga at UFC on Fox 8, Demetrious Johnson has become a new father.

Not every camp distraction is a bad one. On Friday, July 19, Demetrious Johnson and his wife Destiny became the proud parents of a baby boy. It was to be expected, of course. Just two weeks ago he posted this photo of himself in the full glow of pregnancy. And yesterday he posted the photo of him and his new baby on Instagram to confirm the news.

It's hard not to be happy for a guy with a new kid and while part of me thinks the whole thing may have been a bit of a distraction for his upcoming fight, that seems to be part and parcel with being a fighter. We've seen guys run out of the ring and on to planes to get to the hospital for the birth of their child, we've seen fighters propose in the ring, heck we may have even seen a fighter break up in the ring (I'm thinking of Rich Franklin here). Life happens around the sport for fighters. With a six year career under his championship belt I'm sure that Johnson knows how to plan around something as happy as this.

He talked about his emotional state going into this title defense on a recent media conference call:

"The 'mighty baby' should be here any minute and it's no added pressure. I'm happy to be a father but this is the same thing. I'm ready to do my job, this is my career and I'm focused. I'm approaching it as a business and I'm ready to go in there and defend." (quotes via MMA Mania)

UFC on Fox 8 takes place July 27th in Seattle, WA and is headlined by Demetrious Johnson vs. John Moraga for the flyweight title. No word yet if the new baby will be making an appearance at the after party (probably not).
