Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp dropped an interesting morsel on "The Show with Mauro Ranallo" this Wednesday: Invicta is seriously considering adding a 155 pound Lightweight division. Numerous WMMA fighters have voiced interest in a heavier division over recent weeks, as evidenced by this Facebook page. Knapp apparently likes the idea.
In related news, Knapp mentioned that Cristiane Cyborg Justino's latest weight cut was very difficult. If the Lightweight division comes to fruition, Knapp prefers Cyborg to move up a weight class. It's unclear if that would be a full-time switch, or if Cyborg would bounce back and forth between 145 and 155 as contenders emerge.
That could be an interesting strategy for Invicta to keep Cyborg busy. She's clearly their biggest star right now, but her only viable challengers at 145 are Ediane Gomes and Julia Budd. While Knapp indicated that Invicta will soon announce the signings of several Featherweights, neither 145 or 155 are likely to become deep divisions in the near future. Between the two divisions, Cyborg may have a steady stream of challengers.
The prospects for a Rousey/Cyborg super fight were already slim to none. If Cyborg endeavors to gain weight instead of losing it, there's no way she can make 135 or 140. It'd be just peachy if we could put the Rousey/Cyborg talk to bed, and instead panic over the horror that WMMA may have two stars.
